LETTERS TO
OKTAY
I
Ankara, December 8,
1937
9 p.m.
Hell of a
winter.
I'm writing
this first
letter
At the
Hungarian
restaurant.
Dearest Oktay,
Tonight all
the drunks
Send you their
best.
II
Ankara, December 10,
1937
2:30 p.m.
Right now it's
raining out,
Clouds are
drifting
through the
mirror.
These days
Melih and I
Are in love
with the same
girl.
III
Ankara,
January 1,
1938
10 a.m.
Been looking
for a job for
a whole month,
Flat broke,
bedraggled.
If I didn't
love her,
I guess I
wouldn't wait
For the day
I'll die for
my fellow men.
Note: Oktay
Rifat and
Melih Cevdet
Anday, both
famous Turkish
poets,
were close
friends of
Orhan Veli.
